Graduate Student Awards - Call for Nominations

Graduate students and members of faculty; please consider nominating individuals for the following 8 awards. The individuals selected for these awards will be honored at the 6th Annual Graduate Student Awards Gala, to be held on Saturday, March 31st, 2018.

The purpose of the Graduate Student Awards Gala is to celebrate graduate students as well as honour faculty that have generously supported graduate students in research, scholarly and artistic pursuits. The evening will include dinner, award presentations, and an opportunity to network and connect with the university community and the community at large.

Note: Those awarded at a previous GSA Awards Gala are ineligible to apply. Candidates cannot nominate themselves for an award.

Application Content:

  • A letter of nomination (maximum 2 pages).
  • 2 letters of reference (maximum 2 pages each).
  • A maximum of 3 pages supporting documents (optional, to provide further evidence of why the candidate is deserving of the award).

Nomination Letter / Reference Letters:

Please provide a written explanation as to why the nominee has earned the award for which they are being nominated. The explanation should profile the nominee’s contributions to their unit on campus as well as the University as a whole and the community. The individuals should also include how they have been witness to the quality work and positive contributions of the nominee. In the application, try to address the following criteria for the nominee (examples have been given for each):

  • Academic aspect: number and quality of publications, conference presentations, GPA, previous awards.
  • Leadership aspect: teamwork, event organization, community involvement, volunteering,

Submission:

Please place all application content (nomination letter, letters of support, supporting documents) in a sealed envelope. On the front of the envelope, please write the name of the nominee and the award to which the nominee is being nominated for. Please submit nominations to the Graduate Students’ Association (Emmanual & St. Chad, 1337 College Dr, Saskatoon, SK S7N 0W6) from 10 am – 5 pm, Monday - Friday.

Deadline for nominations: Friday, March 2nd, 2018 at 5:00 PM.

Award Categories and Terms of Reference

This award will honour a graduate student advisor who has shown excellent supervisory and mentoring skills as well as exceptional support for their advisees’ ideas, scholarly work, and financial needs. The honoured advisor will embody the capacity to stimulate graduate students to think critically and creatively, while enhancing their graduate student learning experience.

*Nominations will be accepted from any graduate student enrolled in a graduate program at the University of Saskatchewan or an alumna graduate student of the University of Saskatchewan.

Eligibility: Any current University of Saskatchewan faculty member that is / was advising a graduate student that was enrolled between May 2017 – April 2018 in a graduate program at the University of Saskatchewan.

This award will honour a graduate student who has made significant impacts and positive contributions to the local community in Saskatchewan. This will be awarded to a student who has shown extensive initiative and significant achievements in serving the community in addition to excelling in his/her academic studies. This will be awarded to a student who has contributed a minimum of fifty (75) hours of volunteer work from May 1, 2017 – March 1, 2015.

*Nominations will be accepted from any graduate student enrolled in a graduate program at the University of Saskatchewan, any current faculty member at the University of Saskatchewan or an alumna of the University of Saskatchewan.  

*We are encouraging letters of support for this category from community organisations in which the nominee has volunteered with.

Eligibility: Any graduate student enrolled between May 2017 – April 2018 in a graduate program at the University of Saskatchewan.

This award honours a graduate student who has shown strong leadership and exceptional initiatives, going above and beyond his/her call of duty, whilst carrying out the mission of the GSA. This student will have shown outstanding involvement and collaboration with graduate students in his/her unit of study, the GSA council, and the GSA executive.

*Nominations will be accepted from any graduate student enrolled in a graduate program at the University of Saskatchewan, any current faculty member at the University of Saskatchewan or an alumna of the University of Saskatchewan.  

*We are encouraging letters of support for this category from academic council members, GSA council members, and / GSA executives.

Eligibility: Any graduate student enrolled between May 2017 – April 2018 in a graduate program at the University of Saskatchewan.

This award will honour a graduate student who has made significant academic achievements in his/her field of study and who has made outstanding non-academic contributions to his/her department of studies. The awarded graduate student will be a favourable member that exemplifies scholarly achievements and community involvement.

*Nominations will be accepted from any graduate student enrolled in a graduate program at the University of Saskatchewan, any current faculty member at the University of Saskatchewan or an alumna of the University of Saskatchewan.  

Eligibility: Any graduate student enrolled between May 2017 – April 2018 in a non-thesis based graduate program at the University of Saskatchewan

This award will honour a graduate student who has made significant impacts in the field of humanities, arts, social sciences, law or education and who has produced outstanding research results throughout their course of study. The awarded graduate student will be a favourable member in the research community, will exemplify scholarly achievements and will have contributed to positive collaborations amongst researchers and the community.

*Nominations will be accepted from any graduate student enrolled in a graduate program at the University of Saskatchewan, any current faculty member at the University of Saskatchewan or an alumna of the University of Saskatchewan.  

Eligibility: Any graduate student enrolled between May 2017 – April 2018 in a thesis-based graduate program at the University of Saskatchewan.

This award will honour an Indigenous graduate student who has made significant impacts in Indigenous study and research while positively contributing to the Indigenous community. The awarded graduate student will be held in high regard by the Indigenous and research community, will exemplify scholarly achievements, and will have participated in positive collaboration between researchers and the Indigenous community.

*Nominations will be accepted from any graduate student enrolled in a graduate program at the University of Saskatchewan, any current faculty member at the University of Saskatchewan or an alumna of the University of Saskatchewan.  

Eligibility: An Indigenous graduate student that was enrolled between May 2017 – April 2018 in a graduate program (course-based / thesis-based) at the University of Saskatchewan.

This award will honour a graduate student who has made significant impacts in two or more separate, but related, fields of study and who has produced outstanding research results throughout their course of study. The awarded graduate student will be a favourable member in the research community, will exemplify scholarly achievements and will have contributed to positive collaborations amongst researchers and the community.

*Nominations will be accepted from any graduate student enrolled in a graduate program at the University of Saskatchewan, any current faculty member at the University of Saskatchewan or an alumna of the University of Saskatchewan.  

Eligibility: Any graduate student enrolled between May 2017 – April 2018 in a thesis-based graduate program at the University of Saskatchewan

This award will honour a graduate student who has made significant impacts in the field of science and who has produced outstanding research results throughout their course of study. The awarded graduate student will be a favourable member of the research community, will exemplify scholarly achievements and will have contributed to positive collaborations amongst researchers and the community.

*Nominations will be accepted from any graduate student enrolled in a graduate program at the University of Saskatchewan, any current faculty member at the University of Saskatchewan or an alumna of the University of Saskatchewan.  

Eligibility: Any graduate student enrolled between May 2017 – April 2018 in a thesis-based graduate program at the University of Saskatchewan
