Candidate Statements and CV's

Hello! My name is Naheda Sahtout and I am a PhD student in the Department of Chemistry. I have been awarded numerous awards, including the University of Saskatchewan Canada 150 Citizen, in recognition for my engagement and initiatives on and off campus. I have been involved with the GSA since January 2015, as an academic council representative, as a volunteer and currently as the Vice-President External. My current position as the VP External enabled me to gain an in-depth knowledge of the GSA, which would be a great asset to have as President.

If elected as President, I will ensure to continue the current major GSA initiatives, which include graduate student representation and the Student Supervisor Agreement. During my service in the GSA, I have observed the development of these strategic initiatives and to keep these initiatives on the right track, the GSA needs an experienced leader. This is especially true as these initiatives have crossed critical stages, whereby the GSA has built both internal and external trust and a strong network with stakeholders. I see my experience within the GSA, and my candidacy for President, as an opportunity to successfully continue advocating for such long-term changes.

If elected, I will also advocate for more resources that would enable a superior graduate student experience, and I will work with all stakeholders to improve the mental health services for graduate students at the University of Saskatchewan.

I am a PhD student in Mechanical Engineering with strong mentoring, coaching experience to a team with diverse levels of expertise. I thrive on adding value to a role and/or a project, through the use of a solid and successful background in data analysis, combined with ability to listen and understand the different needs and motivations of an organization and using a reasonable proportion of my persuasion and communication skills will allow me to be an effective decision-maker. If I were to describe myself, I would use the following keywords: Analytical, detailed, diplomatic, self-motivated, sense of humor developer!

My experience as a graduate student at the U of S has enriched me with knowledge about academic/student life. During these years, I have dealt with some common issues that any grad students, domestic and international, might face. Thus, to improve students´ experience my work as VP Student Affairs will be focused on achieving three main goals.

First, to create a more cooperative and a stronger working relationship between the GSA and all the graduate students´ groups and associations around Campus. Working together and helping each other would benefit everybody.

Second, to extend the visibility of the GSA to have more active members. This will make the GSA a more diverse and stronger body to representing better all student's interests and fulfilling their needs. The GSA is an organization that cares about inclusivity, leadership, and community enhancement. Personally, I would like to encourage every grad student to take advantage of the benefits that the GSA offers.

Third, during this year 2017-2018, I had the great opportunity to work as the GSA Event Coordinator. This experience enlightened me with some new ideas to improve GSA´s events. Specifically, I would like to focus on refining and enhancing the 3MT competition, which is a prestigious international competition that encourages research-based students to further develop their skills in communicating their research to the broader community.

Finally, I believe that I will be able to help students whenever they encounter any difficulty to make their experience at the University the best.

Hello, I am Sudipto Shekhor Mondol. I go by my mother's name "Dey" on social media. I am an Indian of Bangladeshi origin.

Expectations from me:

  1. Setting up Sexual Assault Survivor Rehabilitation and Peer Mental Support Group: I believe many graduate students are suffering from depression and in need of help.
  2. An equivalent increase in scholarships with respect to tuition fee hikes.
  3. Bursaries to students with children and improved childcare services.
  4. Better facilities at the residences: rent, mattresses, lifts, community gardens, etc.
  5. Multicultural Social event: To bring the different social groups together.
  6. Discipline Specific Workshops (MEMS, Robotics, Microeconomics, Ruby) and multidisciplinary Workshops (Entrepreneurship, TA, RA, Leadership, Idea Commercialization, etc)
  7. More frequent social events with FREE real food (not just cheese, chips and crackers). Introduction of outdoor activities like skiing, skating, bowling, etc.
  8. Form multinational hobby clubs (Photography, Music, Dance, etc)
  9. Help setting up an Iranian Student Association.
  10. International Conferences

To conclude, I am honest. I am going to make sure every penny of your membership fee is worthwhile. On a personal note, I love socializing and met over 350 people since September’17. I am a feminist and I would organize events promoting gender equality and demoting misogyny. I have been trying to make the university experience for students memorable as a part of ISA and would cherish the opportunity to do the same on an international basis.

The position of Vice President (VP) External in the Graduate Students’ Association (GSA) is a sensitive one because it represents the face of the GSA as seen from the outside, and the perception that our stakeholders have of us. For this reason, the VP External must be someone who has a strong experience relating to stakeholders. I am that person! I have had a lot of experience successfully holding several leadership positions that involved correspondence with stakeholders since my high school and undergraduate years, and even currently. Moreover, the tasks within the portfolio of the VP External, such as planning the GSA Gala, coordinating the GSA sports teams, and organizing our monthly Health Chats are areas in which I have gained so much exposure and experience over the years within various organizations.

If elected as Vice President External, I will add value to the GSA in these five areas:

  • creating new partnerships with external sources for awards, professional training, and skills acquisition workshops,
  • incorporating more award categories to the GSA Awards
  • planning a free First Aid training course within the GSA for our graduate students in one of our monthly Health Chats program,
  • introducing incentives to reward active participants in our programs/events, and
  • actively listening to suggestions from graduate students on how to better improve their sports experience within the GSA sports teams.
