To the Graduate Student Community,
On behalf of the Graduate Students’ Association (GSA), we are writing to express our profound sorrow regarding the recent tragedy in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. The loss of nine lives, including young students and educators, is a heartbreak that resonates across our entire academic community and the country.
We understand that events of this magnitude can create a heavy emotional burden, affecting your well-being, research and daily life. Whether you have personal ties to the region or you are alarmed by the events or learning about the tragedy now , please know that you do not have to carry this weight alone.
The GSA is committed to ensuring our members have the support they need. We encourage you to prioritize your mental health and lean on the resources available to our graduate community:
Mental Health & Wellness Support
- Empower Me: This is a confidential, 24/7 mental health service provided through our Studentcare plan. It offers specialized support in multiple languages.
- Student Wellness Centre: For professional counseling or medical appointments, you can reach their team at 306-966-5768.
- Peer Health: For a more informal setting, visit the drop-in support space at the USask Community Centre in Marquis Hall (open Monday–Thursday, 10 am to 3 pm).
Campus & Crisis Assistance
- Residence Support: Graduate students living on campus can access the Counsellor in Residence at 306-966-6171 or connect with the student life coordinator.
- Spiritual Support: USask Faith Leaders are available for students seeking one-on-one spiritual guidance or a compassionate ear.
- Financial Concerns: If this situation has created unexpected financial strain or issues with tuition payments, please contact the Student Finance office to explore available aid.
- Immediate Crisis Care: If you need urgent help outside of office hours, Saskatoon Mobile Crisis (306-933-6200) and Crisis Services Canada (1-833-456-4566) are available 24/7.
