GSA Statement of Support for Iranian Graduate Students

In response to recent events in Iran, the Graduate Students’ Association offers a message of empathy and support to Iranian graduate students and all those affected. The GSA reaffirms its commitment to a respectful, inclusive campus and encourages students to care for one another during this difficult time.

GSA Statement of Support

We know that recent news from Iran has been especially heavy and painful for many in our campus community. Reports of internet shutdowns and disruptions to phone services have left some students unable to communicate with their families or loved ones. We acknowledge how frightening, painful, and isolating this uncertainty can be.

To our Iranian graduate students and all others affected, please know that you are not alone. The Graduate Students’ Association is holding space for you during this difficult time and stands with you in care, empathy and solidarity.

We also encourage all graduate students to look out for one another. If you have colleagues, labmates, or peers who may be impacted by this unexpected situation, we ask that you stand by them. Small acts of understanding, patience, and presence can make a meaningful difference. Your support matters, and they need you.

We reaffirm our commitment to a campus environment grounded in respect, dignity and inclusion. We strongly condemn any form of racism, xenophobia, discrimination or harassment. Our community must continue to be one where everyone feels safe and supported.

Students who are experiencing distress or who simply need someone to talk to are encouraged to seek support. Peer Health support is available through Student Health and Wellbeing. Peer Health provides confidential, non judgemental support from trained student volunteers who can listen, offer guidance, and help connect students with campus resources. This service is designed to support student wellbeing in a compassionate and approachable way. Additional support is also available 24 hours a day through Empower Me by phone, offering immediate access to mental health professionals.

We remain committed to ensuring that the University of Saskatchewan is a welcoming and compassionate space for all students, especially during times of uncertainty and distress.
