A Major Win for Graduate Students: Legal Protection Added to the GSA Health Plan
Eligible GSA members enrolled in the Health Plan now have access to legal consultations and, for qualifying matters, representation at no additional cost. Learn what The Essentials covers and how to request help.
By Hayley PelletierA disputed rent increase, an employment contract or an unfamiliar legal notice can be difficult to manage alongside graduate studies. The GSA is pleased to share a significant improvement to the Health Plan: eligible members enrolled in its Health portion now have access to Alumo’s Legal Protection program, The Essentials, at no additional cost.
Through a partner law firm, students can consult a lawyer about questions in any area of law, including housing, employment, immigration rights and criminal law. A consultation may involve reviewing a contract or formal notice, researching the issue, explaining relevant law and discussing the student’s options. Meetings may take place virtually, by phone or in person.
For qualifying cases in Saskatchewan, the program can also provide representation in disputes involving a housing lease, an employment contract or an academic institution. Examples include a contested eviction or rent increase, a labour-standards matter not covered by a union or government agency, or an eligible dispute with a university. Representation may cover lawyers’ fees and certain legal costs, subject to the program’s limits. Occupational health and safety disputes are excluded from employment representation, while academic disputes involving sexual misconduct or a criminal act are excluded from academic-institution representation.
Notary service is available at the GSA if and when required. The program is provided by lawyers in good standing with the Law Society of Saskatchewan. It is available to eligible GSA members enrolled in the Health Plan, not to their dependants, and conditions and exclusions apply.
