Graduate Students' Association

Election Personal Statement

I am A K M Munzurul Hasan, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Biology. I am honoured to stand as a President position within the Graduate Students’ Association (GSA). I have served as an executive member of the GSA at Memorial University of Newfoundland, which helped me to bring valuable experience in effectively addressing the needs of graduate students and promoting a supportive community.

If elected, I will prioritize initiatives aimed at improving academic resources, promoting student wellness, and enhancing opportunities for professional development. I am committed to working collaboratively with faculty, administration, and fellow students to ensure that our voices are heard, and our concerns are addressed. One of my key priorities is to address financial concerns by advocating for an increase in the minimum guaranteed scholarship for thesis-based programs. I also aim to increase the number of need-based bursaries to assist students facing financial hardships. Additionally, I will advocate for the introduction of paid maternity leave for pregnant graduate students, ensuring that they have the support they need during this important time in their lives.

Moreover, I will attempt to reduce tuition fees for MSc students, making higher education more accessible and affordable. Additionally, I will advocate for reducing the wait time to get a doctor's appointment at the Student Wellness Centre, as timely access to healthcare services is vital for student well-being. Lastly, I will actively pursue initiatives to secure space for childcare facilities for the children of graduate students.
